COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Laura Ringo has led Spartanburg PAL nearly 20 years, growing the nonprofit from a small heart health program to a major advocate for community wellness. Her work (which began in 2003) has expanded local efforts to include trail building and events that boost quality of life.  The Post and Courier
  • Spartanburg residents can honor MLK Day with a series of events, including Walk As One on Saturday, Jan. 17 at the Robert Hett Chapman III Center for Philanthropy, a community celebration Sunday at the Memorial Auditorium, and MLK Day of Service volunteer projects Monday at local sites.  Go Upstate

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Target announced that two new stores will open in Lexington and Seneca as part of a nationwide expansion to add 30 locations this year. Opening dates have not been set yet (details pending).  Go Upstate

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rock the Country announced its 2026 lineup for a summer country music festival touring eight cities, including Anderson on July 25-26 where Creed and Shinedown will perform. Tickets go on sale Friday, Jan. 16 at 2 p.m. EST (prices vary).  WYFF

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A lottery ticket bought at Ken Food Mart #2 at 496 S. Church Street in Spartanburg won $418,000 on Jan. 11 and the winner has 180 days to claim the prize.  WYFF
  • Duke Energy will update its customer bills starting this month to recover costs from Hurricane Helene and strengthen the grid; DEC customers will see a 3.2% storm charge (about $4.58 for a 1,000-kWh user) with further DEP and DEC increases on Feb. 1 and Mar. 1 respectively.  Spartanburg.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Models show flurries may appear in the Upstate on Thursday as polar air cools temperatures (no significant accumulation is expected). Forecasts say Sunday will bring a 20% chance of mixed precipitation with highs in the 40s, mainly affecting higher elevations.  WYFF

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, Sparkle City Dental & Orthodontics reopened its modern office at 300 Union St., Suite A with a family-friendly design and upgraded technology. The practice, which moved from 371 Whitney Rd., supported the Boys & Girls Club of the Crescent Region with a $1,000 donation to help children build healthy habits.  Spartanburg.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Upstate Ingles invites the community to vote for the high school girls Athlete of the Week, with multiple votes allowed for performances from Jan. 5 to Jan. 11 — the poll closes at noon Jan.15.  Go Upstate
  • Upstate Ingles high school asks local voters to choose the boys Athlete of the Week for Jan. 5-Jan. 11 as the poll remains open until noon on Jan. 15; top contenders include Chesnee's Eli Brown, who scored 41 points in a triple-overtime win, and Riverside's Sebi Boyogueno, who had 31 points and 10 rebounds.  Go Upstate
