CRIME NEWS

  • Three people were found dead Friday morning in a Greer home on Marilyn Perry Lane off Reidville Rd.—the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office said a neighbor called at about 11:30 a.m. and deputies entered the house, finding the bodies and reporting no threat to the public.  WYFF
  • Jerry Scott Payne, a 52-year-old from Gaffney, was charged with first-degree assault and battery and unlawful dissemination of obscene material for allegedly touching a 16-year-old and showing pornographic videos between November and December — he was booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center and his case will be prosecuted by the Seventh Circuit Solicitor’s Office.  WYFF
  • Authorities charged Lewis Hyder (77) with stealing thousands of dollars and taking the victim's 2001 Chevrolet Camaro after he misused his power of attorney between March 1 and June 7, 2023.  WSPA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spartanburg County and the City of Spartanburg unveiled drawings for a joint government building on South Church Street and West Broad Street in downtown. The five-story, $80 million facility will begin construction in October and take about two years as it brings city and county services together.  Go Upstate
  • Governor Henry McMaster met with local officials Friday at Table Rock to say that dry conditions and strong winds helped wildfires burn over 8,600 acres at Table Rock and about 2,000 acres at Persimmon Ridge while he secured federal aid and set a state burn ban. More than 545 firefighters are battling the blazes as evacuations forced over 1,400 structures to leave — no homes or injuries have been reported.  Go Upstate

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • City Council approved a $19 million plan on March 24 to build over 80 townhome units on a 7.8-acre lot near Country Club Road and South Pine Street — the project will include 10% workforce housing for families earning under $60,150 and a 20-year tax abatement. The development will also add a new crosswalk to connect to the Daniel Morgan Trail System as part of the city’s effort to address its housing shortage.  The Post and Courier
