- ➤ South Carolina poets challenged Gov. McMaster’s move after he announced Patrick Davis—a Nashville-based singer-songwriter—as the new state poet laureate on March 30. Seven local poets say the decision bypassed a 2021 process and Davis is revising a controversial song verse set for state review. Go Upstate
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Spartanburg County students in school districts three and seven will begin a new advanced manufacturing program at the Daniel Morgan Technology Center with support from the SME Prime partnership. The program will launch next school year and provide modern equipment + certifications to help students learn new skills for growing trades. WYFF
- ➤ NASA recently launched Artemis II, the first crewed moon mission in over 50 years, with Clemson alumni Charlie Blackwell-Thompson — Gaffney’s first woman launch director — and Vanessa Wyche, the first Black woman director at the Johnson Space Center, playing key roles. The mission launched from Kennedy Space Center and passed control to Houston. WYFF

- ➤ State lawmakers overrode Gov. Henry McMaster’s veto on April 1 to keep college athletes’ revenue-sharing details private at state schools—saying the measure protects them from competitive disadvantage. The Post and Courier

- ➤ Dr. Linda Bell retired from the Department of Public Health on March 31 as Spartanburg County's measles outbreak nears its end (no new cases have been reported and officials expect a declaration of resolution on April 26). Go Upstate

- ➤ South Carolinians favor white Peeps as their top Easter treat with new flavors including collaborations with Pop-Tarts, SunnyD, and Chili Lime Mango available at major local retailers.
