COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hampton County’s Sergeant Major Francis ‘Quinn’ Lawton (16) was named National Young Marine of the Year, and the Upstate Young Marines from Greenville was honored as National Unit of the Year for their community service; Lawton will travel nationally as a role model while preparing for The Citadel.  Go Upstate

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cowpens National Battlefield in Cherokee will conduct prescribed burns with access restricted (for fire crews and visitors) over parts of its 268-acre tour loop road; officials say nearby communities may experience minor smoke and reduced visibility.  WYFF
  • A forecast for hurricane season 2026 states that near-average storms are expected due to El Niño, but the Carolinas remain at risk for impacts like heavy rain and flooding (especially with early season storms). South Carolina residents are urged to prepare.  Go Upstate
  • Most of the state remains in drought with high wildfire risks, and areas such as Spartanburg face extreme dryness. Forecasters say an El Niño weather pattern will bring needed rain starting this summer and cooler temperatures by winter (NOAA forecasts).  Go Upstate

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials in Spartanburg County report no new measles cases since March 17 and plan to declare the outbreak over on April 26 if the 42-day period with no infections is met. The outbreak has reached 997 cases since October—vaccination and quarantine efforts helped control the spread.  Go Upstate
