CRIME NEWS

  • A Westminster man, 43-year-old William Barney Drummond, was booked at the Oconee County Detention Center on a murder charge after fatally striking 34-year-old Devon James Turner on South Highway 11 near East Spearman Road—he was arrested in Georgia in February while driving an unregistered truck.  WYFF

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band will perform at 8 p.m. on April 12 at Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium as part of its farewell tour — they will then play at 7:30 p.m. on April 13 at Charleston Music Hall. Founding member Jimmie Fadden said the band is excited to perform in Spartanburg because of its rich musical history.  The Post and Courier
  • A series of 10 diverse spring events are set to take place Upstate—ranging from music and auto shows to baseball games, art exhibits, theatrical performances, and drone light shows, with activities starting today and continuing through May 31. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Project 100 will help local childcare centers add 100 new seats by funding small improvements to ease childcare challenges for working families. The plan — led by OneSpartanburg, Inc., Power Up Spartanburg, the Mary Black Foundation, Spartanburg County First Steps and Quality Counts — gives $75,000 from Power Up, $25,000 from the OneSpartanburg Vision Plan and $100,000 from the Mary Black Foundation, with proposals accepted through April 23 and centers notified by mid-to-late May.  Spartanburg.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Carolina Sen. Karl Allen—representing Greenville—responded on Thursday to comments by White House Trade Advisor Peter Navarro that BMW's business model in Spartanburg harms the U.S. economy and national security. He said BMW's operations have created over 11,000 direct jobs, support nearly 43,000 jobs statewide and boost local prosperity.  WYFF

  • Kingston Homestyle Kitchen serves authentic Jamaican dishes like jerk chicken, butter shrimp and oxtail at its Spartanburg location on North Church Street.
