  • In Salem, neighbors held a drop-by parade for 12-year-old Brinlee Cannon who is leaving for a heart transplant on Sunday—her family said she spent months in the hospital and has asked for prayers as they plan a fish fry on June 7 to help cover medical costs.  WYFF
  • The Harry Dallara Foundation and City of Spartanburg will hold a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for two renovated youth ballfields at Duncan Park on May 3. The event will offer baseball activities for local youth, speeches by Mayor Jerome Rice and MLB figures, and an unveiling of a plaque honoring the Spartanburg Sluggers — all at no cost.  Spartanburg.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Spartanburg police say Travis Lee Wilkins was charged with murder and weapon possession after fatally shooting 45-year-old Norman Higgins at the John C. Bull Apartments on Marion Avenue around 3:20 p.m. Wednesday — local schools went on lockdown as officers pursued and later apprehended the suspect while Higgins was taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center and later died.  WYFF
