ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Spartanburg County troopers said a minivan—driven by 70-year-old Arthur William Metcalf of Greer—went off the road just before 11 a.m. on Liberty Hill Road near Freeman Farm Road, hitting trees, a ditch and another tree before the driver died at the scene.  WYFF
  • A fire broke out at the Super Lodge motel on East Main Street in downtown Spartanburg on Friday morning before 10 a.m.—video footage showed thick smoke as officials have yet to determine the cause or the extent of damage.  WSPA

CRIME NEWS

  • Spartanburg police responded at around 6:40 p.m. on Friday at WestGate Mall when two groups got into an altercation—someone began shooting, hurting three people who were sent to the hospital while two suspects were detained as the investigation continued.  WYFF

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Proposed cuts to USDA's Community Eligibility Provision threaten free school meals for over 246,000 children statewide and 11,848 in Spartanburg District 06. Advocates urge Congress to invest in the program instead of cutting funds — if approved, the changes could remove free meals from more than 24,000 schools nationwide.  Go Upstate
  • Limestone University in Gaffney will close at the end of the academic semester due to financial challenges—its final commencement ceremonies are scheduled for today at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Fullerton Auditorium. Several South Carolina colleges are offering scholarships and transfer assistance to help nearly 1,600 affected students find a new school.  The Post and Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spartanburg County Council member David Britt will leave his post after the May 19 meeting to join the South Carolina Public Service Commission—City Council member Rob Rain will resign to serve on the South Carolina Ports Authority, and special elections will be held soon to fill their seats.  Go Upstate

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Zillow now forecasts that U.S. home values will drop 1.9% in 2025 after earlier predicting a 0.6% increase because of more listings and higher mortgage rates; in South Carolina, Spartanburg is expected to see a small decline of 0.3% while average home values remain near $298,000+other areas are projected to experience larger drops.  Go Upstate
