COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Homeowners can prepare during National Hurricane Preparedness Week, May 3–9, by updating emergency kits and home policies. Experts advise cleaning yards to remove wind‐borne items and checking property for improvements before the season begins.  WYFF

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new gallery displays top photos from proms across the Upstate (captured at Bleckley Station in downtown Anderson and the Greenville Convention Center) between April 10 and May 2. Students celebrated with dancing, photo booths and live music.  Go Upstate

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices increased on May 4 with local averages at $4.005—below the $4.457 national rate—according to AAA. Rising crude oil costs and Middle Eastern tensions (which restrict flows in the Strait of Hormuz) are expected to keep fuel prices volatile.  Go Upstate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Some SC taxpayers charged penalties and interest during the COVID-19 pandemic could be owed refunds after a federal court ruling extended tax deadlines for 2019–2022 to July 10, 2023. Eligible taxpayers must file protective claims by July 10, 2026 — a final deadline to preserve their refund rights.  Go Upstate

  • The Spartanburg girls lacrosse team won the SCHSL Class 5A Division 1 Upper State championship — defeating J.L. Mann 18-3 on Monday, May 4.  Go Upstate
