  • Today, The Meyer Center for Special Children hosts its 37th annual Kids Classic Golf Tournament to raise funds for education and intensive therapy services for children with disabilities. Golfers will play 27 holes on six courses—Bright’s Creek, Cliffs Valley, Country Club of Spartanburg, Green Valley, Greenville Country Club Riverside, and Kenmure Country Club.  Spartanburg.com

BUSINESS NEWS

  • AIRSYS Cooling Technologies Inc. will break ground on its new global headquarters and manufacturing facility along Hwy.101 in Woodruff on May 8 — the $40 million project will create more than 215 new jobs for the area.  WYFF

CRIME NEWS

  • Six Upstate residents, including a set of twins and their grandmother, pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute meth and were sentenced to a total of 813 months in federal prison last week—evidence showed the twins ran stash houses and traveled to Atlanta for drugs.  WYFF

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Limestone University held its final graduation on May 3 as financial troubles, declining enrollment and federal lawsuits forced the abrupt closure—leaving students, faculty and staff with deep sorrow over the loss of a historic institution.  The Post and Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Carolina residents must obtain their REAL ID or another acceptable document like a passport before May 7 to fly or access federal facilities. The SCDMV warns that waiting until the deadline will lead to long lines—so act early to avoid travel delays.  Go Upstate
  • Palmetto Payback is a new initiative that will automatically send out checks to residents with qualified unclaimed property; the first wave of payments totaling over $600,000 will arrive in homes this week — state treasurer Curtis Loftis says the effort aims to return forgotten funds directly to South Carolinians.  WYFF

  • Christina Van Slambrook of Compass Realty urged Spartanburg homebuyers to explore creative ways to lower monthly mortgage payments without a 20 percent down payment—options include buying down the interest rate upfront.
