  • Navy veteran Dan Lollis served 20 years before he retired in 2012; he trained in Meridian and worked on the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan where he saw 9/11 and early airstrikes in Afghanistan — he later earned a bachelor’s degree in 2015 and now works as a defense contractor — while crediting his wife for her support.  WSPA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Asian needle ants, seen in the Southeast since 1932, are increasing in numbers and are active in the Upstate from March through late October—experts say their stings can trigger severe allergic reactions like anaphylaxis—and residents are urged to be cautious in moist, wooded areas.  Go Upstate

HEALTH NEWS

  • Global Virus Network has called for increased H5N1 surveillance and biosecurity as experts warn the virus may mutate—even though only four mild human cases have been reported nationally. South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control said it is using routine bird, dairy, and wastewater testing and will notify the public if any human cases occur.  Go Upstate
