ECONOMY NEWS

  • Thyssenkrupp Supply Chain Services, Inc. will cut 110 positions at its Greer facility by July 5, marking the second round of layoffs in the area amid local restructuring.  Go Upstate
  • On May 6, regular gas in South Carolina averaged $4.19—set lower than the US average of $4.54—as global oil supplies were strained by a conflict over the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts said price swings may continue as diplomatic efforts evolve.  Go Upstate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kratom users and law enforcement in South Carolina are calling for clearer rules amid a surge in potent, plant-based products; Gov. McMaster recently signed a bill to regulate manufacturing and sales (including fines), and a House bill may soon classify kratom as a Schedule I substance.  WYFF

HEALTH NEWS

  • Utz recalled nine potato chip products on May 6 due to a possible salmonella risk from a seasoning with dry milk powder from a supplier linked to other recalls, urging consumers to discard the items and call Utz Customer Care for more details.  Go Upstate

SPORTS NEWS

  • On May 5, Dorman boys lacrosse beat Clover 11-10 in triple overtime at Cavalier Stadium to win the 5A Division 1 Upper State championship (with a 13-3 record) and will play for the state title on May 9 at Irmo High School.  Go Upstate
  • The Spartanburgers scored seven early runs at Fifth Third Park on Tuesday night + the Wilmington Blue Rocks rallied for a 14-8 win to start the series.  Spartanburg.com
  • South Carolina coach Shane Beamer joked about missing three FaceTime calls from Clemson coach Dabo Swinney on May 2 (when Swinney attended a George Strait concert). Beamer’s fan tour included a final stop on May 6 near Segra Park, where Swinney hosted his last offseason event.  Go Upstate
