CRIME NEWS

  • A Gaffney grandmother and her twin granddaughters pleaded guilty to federal drug charges as part of a drug ring that used stash houses to distribute methamphetamine & fentanyl, resulting in a combined federal prison sentence of 813 months handed down on May 2.  Go Upstate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The new Middle Tyger Education Center is a $19 million early childhood facility being built in Duncan and is set to open in August 2026 with 17 classrooms that will serve 260 children and create 25 new jobs—located on 13 donated acres near Duncan Elementary School. Construction will start in late 2025 as local groups partner on the project to address growing child care needs.  The Post and Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Statehouse negotiators reached an agreement on liquor liability reform that will change how bars and restaurants share damages in drunk driving cases. The bill will lower insurance costs—by adding staff training and new digital ID systems for bars open after midnight—and calls for a broader tort reform discussion in 2026.  The Post and Courier
  • The state House passed an income tax reform bill on May 7 that changes the state's tax system — from a three-tier plan to a two-tier system with the first $30,000 taxed at 1.99 percent — and the Senate will consider it in 2026. If passed, the law may cut taxes for 42 percent of earners by 2027.  The Post and Courier
