COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new weekly news segment called 'Aquí Para Ti' will offer local news for Spanish-speaking families in the Carolinas and Georgia—Rey Llerena from WYFF News 4 will share health updates, legislation stories, and community events every Friday.  WYFF

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Henry McMaster signed the Educator Assistance Act this week in Greenville— a law that now requires districts to include detailed job assignments and projected minimum salaries in teachers' contracts. Patrick Kelly of the Palmetto State Teachers Association said the new law is expected to help fill over 1,000 vacant teaching positions and boost teacher retention— officials hope this change will make school jobs more competitive.  WYFF

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Carolina legislature amended bill H.3497 to adjust liquor liability laws for bars, restaurants, and small venues by shifting liability and offering cost breaks for establishments meeting set criteria+ Advocacy groups had raised concerns over a 2017 law that led to high insurance costs and closures. Gov. McMaster will review the measure+ and if approved, the changes will take effect July 1, 2026.  Go Upstate
  • The South Carolina House approved the Hands-Free Driving Act on Thursday after the Senate passed it on Wednesday—drivers using a cellphone while driving will face a $100 fine for a first offense and $200 for later violations. The law now heads to Gov. Henry McMaster's desk to help avoid a $50 million federal funding cut.  Go Upstate
