  • Xoted Biotechnology Labs opened a new center in Spartanburg County today with a $4.2 million investment that created 34 jobs at its Duncan site. The lab will study ways to clean plants, test seeds and develop new textiles—also serving as a hub for science and school programs.  Spartanburg.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Spartanburg police are investigating a scam after a local woman lost $5,500 when she followed a fake PayPal email that falsely congratulated her on a gun purchase+ she withdrew money from her bank and transferred it to Bitcoin at a gas station before realizing the fraud.  WSPA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wofford College will award honorary degrees to Jerry Cogan and the Rev. John Wesley Culp at its 171st Commencement on Sunday, May 18—Margaret Young, a 1992 graduate and board trustee, will deliver the address as exercises begin at 9:30 a.m. on the Main Building lawn.  Spartanburg.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spartanburg County Councilman David Britt, the longest-serving member with 34 years on the council, will leave office on May 20 to join the S.C. Public Service Commission that regulates utilities such as Duke Energy — his move will also require him to leave his role at Tindall Corp.  The Post and Courier

HEALTH NEWS

  • Jessica Evans started Eat the Leaf in Roebuck after a gluten-free diet helped her health, and she now grows over 100 varieties of culinary and medicinal herbs sold online, at local markets, and through garden centers—she also offers gardening workshops, plans to expand her greenhouse, and will host an herb culinary class on May 22.  The Post and Courier
