COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Pet Resource Center at 1591 Southport Road had a soft opening on May 11 and will officially open on Tuesday, May 19 to offer a pet food pantry, low-cost veterinary care (including spay/neuter services) and adoption support to help families keep pets at home.  Go Upstate

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Airsys Cooling Technologies opened its North American headquarters in Woodruff on a 60-acre campus as a hub for zero-water cooling technologies for data centers and facilities. The $60 million facility is under construction and will begin manufacturing operations early 2027 with 215 employees expected.  The Post and Courier
  • A survey of over 35,000 shoppers showed that Walmart and Aldi were the most trusted grocery stores, with the results released May 13 highlighting cost savings and private label brands amid rising food prices. In Spartanburg, consumers continue to favor these budget-friendly options.  Go Upstate

CULTURE NEWS

  • Spartanburg ArtWalk will return on Thursday, May 21, offering an evening route through downtown galleries, studios, and creative spaces from 5-8 p.m. Visitors can enjoy self-guided exhibits and local artist talks while supporting the art community.  Spartanburg.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jeremiah Anderson, a high school student from Duncan, went viral after singing The Rainbow Connection with a Kermit the Frog doll during his Byrnes High School choir concert—his father recorded the performance on May 11 and celebrated over 2.4 million views on Facebook.  Go Upstate

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Environmental and citizen groups are voicing concerns about the proposed natural gas plant and a 71-mile underground pipeline in Canadys. They worry that rising utility costs and damage to the ACE Basin will affect local properties and urge regulators to hold utilities accountable.  Go Upstate

SPORTS NEWS

  • Southside soccer's Erik Martinez scored two goals on May 13 in a 4 to 1 semifinal win against Daniel, raising his total to 29 career goals. His performance helped his team advance to the 4A Upper State final.  Go Upstate
  • USC Upstate took control early and beat struggling Clemson 6-3 at Fifth Third Park in Spartanburg on May 12. Clemson now faces a challenging finish as the Tigers will play Virginia Tech from May 14-16 & hope to turn their season around.  Go Upstate
