EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wofford President Dr. Nayef Namhat delivered his emotional farewell address at his final commencement on May 17 (yesterday) at the school in Spartanburg, highlighting education and opportunity for future graduates.  Go Upstate
  • Organizers of the second annual Piedmont Publishing Symposium say writers, publishers, students and recent graduates will attend practical sessions on book publishing at the Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Center for the Arts at Wofford College on May 20-21 in Spartanburg. Tickets cost $79.74 for the full event and $37.74 for Thursday.  Spartanburg.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • USC Upstate's historic softball run ended yesterday with a 9-0 loss to Alabama in the Tuscaloosa Regional final; the Spartans reached their first NCAA regional championship game by winning two elimination games over the weekend. Coach Chris Hawkins said the team took a big step on the national stage.  Go Upstate
  • Ingles high schools are inviting fans to vote for the boys athlete of the week for performances from May 11-17, with multiple votes allowed until noon on May 21. Candidates include a shot put record breaker, track stars, and soccer+baseball players.  Go Upstate
  • SCHSL high school baseball and softball championships are set this week; Spartanburg faces Dorman in a Class 5A Division 1 baseball game on May 19 at 6:30 p.m., and elimination games in various classes are scheduled through May 23 — details cover both sports contests.  Go Upstate
