- ➤ Upstate leaders celebrated the official ribbon cutting of the new Pet Resource Center on Southpoint Road in Spartanburg County. The $24.6 million center, funded by American Rescue funds and built with over a decade of county collaboration, now offers animal adoptions, foster care and medical services — and is hiring staff. - ➤ Spartanburg County Parks & Recreation opened free splash pads at Tyger River Park (Duncan) and Va-Du-Mar McMillan Park (Boiling Springs) on Saturday, May 16. They operate daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. to provide families a cool outdoor option. Spartanburg.com
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Woodruff recorded the fastest growth in the state with a 16.8% population increase from mid-2024 to mid-2025, adding new schools, upgraded water systems and an athletic complex—while Greer also grew by 7.3% as more residents moved to the Upstate. Go Upstate

- ➤ Severe drought persists in South Carolina (including Spartanburg where rain chances are 72% on May 21), raising the risk of fireworks and outdoor fires over Memorial Day. Officials warn that upcoming showers will not end the dry spell so residents should exercise extra caution. Go Upstate

- ➤ Residents near the NorthMark data center on South Pine Street are worried about bright lights, noise, traffic, and long-term water and power use during construction.
