Today a new downtown walking map brings history alive by guiding visitors over five blocks from Morgan Square and highlighting fourteen sites.

The project was a joint effort by the Spartanburg County Historical Association, the City of Spartanburg and the Spartanburg Convention and Visitors Bureau—fulfilling a recommendation from the County’s Tourism Action Plan.

Spartanburg got its name from the Revolutionary War Spartan Regiment formed in 1775 that fought in key battles; the county was named in 1785 and the city was incorporated in 1831.

A 1920s branding campaign turned the city into Hub City due to its railroad history — while Sparkle City likely emerged from playful word association.

Senator Josh Kimbrell confirmed that multiple investigations are underway regarding former Sheriff Chuck Wright and urged residents to maintain trust in the sheriff’s office.
