- ➤ A Spartanburg man named Brandon Kevon White, age 36, pleaded guilty today to charges of discharging a firearm into a vehicle and burglary after a drive—by shooting in October 2023 and a burglary on Bryant Road in April; he was sentenced to 15 years for second degree burglary, five years for petit larceny, and 10 years each for breach of peace and shooting a vehicle— all sentences will run concurrently. - ➤ The City of Spartanburg will unveil the new Southside Cultural Monument on June 14 at 10 a.m. at the intersection of South Converse Street and Hudson Barksdale Boulevard — local leaders including Mayor Jerome Rice and State Rep. - ➤ Four candidates, Nick Duncan, Randy Hollifield, Andy Clark and Joseph Hawes, have announced plans to run for sheriff after former Sheriff Chuck Wright resigned, setting a special election for November 4. Interim Sheriff Jeffrey Stephens is working to bring calm to the office as filing opens June 13 and closes June 21 with a primary on August 5 and a possible runoff on August 19. Go Upstate
- ➤ Gov. Henry McMaster signed the South Carolina Kratom Consumer Protection Act on May 12 to ban sales of kratom to anyone under 21 and require clear labels on each product—retailers will face fines of $1,000 for a first offense and $2,000 for later ones. The law will go into effect 60 days from signing while state officials work with businesses to enforce the new rules. WYFF
- ➤ Gov. Henry McMaster signed a law that makes sharing intimate pictures without consent a crime in South Carolina—this law also covers computer-made images and sets fees of $5,000 and jail time, with tougher penalties for repeat offenders; it took effect on May 12. WYFF
