Good morning, Spartanburg. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 12th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Communities across Spartanburg, Greenville, Cherokee, Greenwood and Oconee counties are celebrating Juneteenth with events held from early to late June. The schedule features an art exhibition running until June 27, a cultural monument unveiling on June 14, parades, block parties and educational forums — giving locals many ways to observe the day.  WSPA
  • A USC Upstate nursing student from Spartanburg is biking over 3,000 miles from Washington to New York to raise $10,000 for MANNA FoodBank, which helps families in Western Carolina. He began his ride a month ago, has lost weight, and documents his progress with the tag MilesWithMufa — his journey highlights the kindness of strangers along the way.  WYFF

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Black bears are increasingly sighted in the Upstate as growing human activity and doorbell cameras capture more images—450 reports were noted last year by the Department of Natural Resources. Residents are urged to secure food and garbage to avoid attracting bears that are generally timid and rarely harm people.  Go Upstate

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Summer dining in the Upstate offers a range of outdoor experiences with rooftop bars, sidewalk cafes, and second-floor balconies featuring scenic views and diverse menus—restaurants in Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Simpsonville, and Pendleton will serve up fresh dining options this summer.  Go Upstate
  • Travel guide Chumley Cope from Explore Up Close advises locals to drive scenic two-lane roads such as Highway 288 and Highway 9 for day trips that reveal the best of the region. He adds that slowing down and being open to unexpected stops + sampling local eateries can turn a simple drive into an adventure.  Go Upstate

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • On June 5, the Pacolet Town Council gave initial approval to Mark III Properties' rezoning request for an 80-acre site — Wilson Crossing — that could add nearly 300 homes and 12 acres for commercial space as part of a $75 million project; a second reading is scheduled for June 26. Some longtime locals oppose the plan — they worry it will change the town's small-community feel and their familiar landscape.  The Post and Courier
