CRIME NEWS

  • South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced that Mikalia S. Mitchell, 32, of Pacolet was arrested on two forgery counts and one count of medical assistance provider fraud—she was booked into Spartanburg County Detention Center on June 12 for allegedly falsifying timesheets to claim unrendered care for Medicaid beneficiaries.  WYFF
  • The South Carolina Department of Corrections said Todd Kohlhepp was moved to the most secure unit at Kirkland Correctional Institution last Friday as officials investigate additional charges—concerns include his alleged effort to profit from his crimes, and he is serving a life sentence after admitting to killing seven people with a 2016 case in Spartanburg when deputies found Kala Brown chained on his property.  WYFF

CULTURE NEWS

  • Residents across the Upstate will celebrate Juneteenth with events such as a veteran 5K run in Greenville today at 7 a.m. & the Spartanburg BEC Gala on June 20, while other gatherings like a race seminar at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, a car and bike show in Piedmont, and a homeownership panel in Greenville honor African American independence.  Go Upstate

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Labor reported that initial unemployment claims in South Carolina increased last week, with filings rising to 3,125 from 2,458 the week before — while nationwide claims remained at 248,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis.  Go Upstate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Candidates for Spartanburg County sheriff paid a filing fee of $3,083.33—half the original fee—after a recent council vote cut the sheriff’s salary to $100,000. Filing opened June 13 for the special election after former Sheriff Chuck Wright resigned amid an FBI investigation.  The Post and Courier
  • Today, protests will take place across South Carolina as part of the national 'No Kings' movement, including an event in Spartanburg. Attorney General Alan Wilson said police will act fast against unruly behavior + law enforcement is prepared to maintain order.  The Post and Courier
  • Spartanburg County’s interim sheriff is holding a press conference today to share his plans for the sheriff’s office and its future—he will detail planned changes to improve department operations.  WSPA
  • Interim Sheriff Jeffery Stephens said on June 13 that Operation Rolling Thunder is canceled after former Sheriff Chuck Wright’s son resigned from the sheriff’s office and he will not run in the upcoming election. He said he will review evidence and financial procedures to restore public trust in the office.  The Post and Courier
