CRIME NEWS

  • The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office is asking for help identifying four suspects in connection with several crimes in the Moore and Roebuck area on Thursday morning—security video shows the individuals parking outside a convenience store and taking cases of water from a gray Acura with a paper tag.  WYFF

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The spotted lanternfly, a bug from Asia, was found in South Carolina for the first time and may harm local farms and forests. Clemson University's Department of Plant Industry said the pest could damage agriculture — and asked residents to report any sightings.  Go Upstate

FINANCE NEWS

  • A new GoBankingRates report shows that $1 million in retirement savings lasts 18.7 years in South Carolina compared to 23.3 years in West Virginia and only 7.3 years in Hawaii. The study used data (groceries, housing, utilities, transportation, and health care costs) from the U.S. Census and Missouri Economic Research Information Center to compare cost-of-living differences across states.  Go Upstate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Candidates for Spartanburg County Sheriff spoke at Converse University’s Twitchell Auditorium on Friday to share ideas on restoring trust and addressing community safety after former sheriff Chuck Wright resigned in May. The forum discussed key issues — the primary election is set for August 5 and the special election for November 4 — as candidates outlined plans to improve officer retention and community engagement.  WSPA
  • The Spartanburg County NAACP will host a sheriff forum on July 15 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the CC Woodson Community Center—free tickets are required and candidates will explain their platforms—after former Sheriff Chuck Wright resigned amid ethics and credit card misuse concerns.  Go Upstate
  • Nine candidates are running for the Spartanburg County Sheriff position after Chuck Wright resigned in May following his leave of absence—nine candidates have stepped up to fill the vacancy. The primary will be held Aug. 5 with early voting through Aug. 1 and may include a runoff on Aug. 19, while a special election is set for Nov. 4 with early voting from Oct. 20—Oct. 31.  WYFF
