COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Spartanburg is improving pedestrian safety and connectivity by expanding trails such as the Daniel Morgan Trail System, Mary Black Foundation Rail Trail and Hub City Hopper trail—efforts meant to give residents a safe way to reach key destinations. The city spent $2.5 million on a project that narrowed West Main Street and added bike lanes and multi-use trails to boost downtown travel.  The Post and Courier

ECONOMY NEWS

  • South Carolina's Tax-Free Weekend will start on August 1 at 12:01 a.m. and run through August 3, and shoppers will pay no 6% sales tax on many school, clothing, and computer items & the guidelines clearly list which items are exempt and which are not.  Go Upstate

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Spartanburg PAL is planning to pave a 2,200 foot ADA accessible trail extension on Wildflower Way in Edwin M. Griffin Nature Preserve and work is expected to begin soon despite weather delays—this project is funded by private donations and a grant from the S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism.  The Post and Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Spartanburg City Council met today to discuss delaying downtown projects—specifically, the Morgan Square redevelopment and the redesign of its historic clock tower amid new hotel and housing plans that may remove nearly 300 surface parking spaces. City Manager Chris Story and council members supported postponement—final decisions on the clock tower changes will be made later.  WYFF
  • On July 10, Frank George Roberts filed a civil suit in Spartanburg accusing State Sen. Josh Kimbrell of diverting $2 million from their joint venture Exodus Aircraft for personal and campaign costs — Kimbrell denies the allegations while a temporary restraining order remains pending a court hearing.  Go Upstate
  • The U.S. Department of Justice is targeting South Carolina’s franchise law that bans car makers from selling directly to consumers as part of its new Anticompetitive Regulations Task Force. Federal officials will work with the Federal Trade Commission and state agencies to revise the law—while local auto dealers remain opposed to any changes.  The Post and Courier
