CRIME NEWS

  • The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office reported 90-year-old Earnest Nash, who has dementia, was last seen driving a black Ford Ranger on July 17 and is now missing—officials ask anyone with information to call 911.  WSPA
  • SLED began investigating former Sheriff Chuck Wright for using his county credit card for personal expenses — including fast food, hotels and Apple.com purchases — a probe that led to federal inquiries, his May resignation and the appointment of interim Sheriff Jeffery Stephens to review office policies.  The Post and Courier
  • Former Spartanburg police officer Ahmad Tyreek Cheeks, 26, was arrested and charged with third-degree criminal sexual misconduct for allegedly using force on a vulnerable person during an October 10 incident—he was fired on July 17, posted a $20,000 bond, and is set for an initial court appearance on Sept. 25.  Go Upstate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Spartanburg School District 2 will add 13 AI integrated metal detectors at five schools before the new school year to help keep students safe and calm parent fears. Each device will cost $21,000 per year and will alert security by sending photos and location data when it spots a potential threat — boosting overall school safety.  WYFF

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spartanburg County voters can start early voting for the sheriff and county council district 3 primaries on July 21 at the new Conference Room 1 entrance of the County Administration Building — early voting is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. until August 1 with absentee ballots due by 5:00 p.m. on July 25. Voters may also cast ballots on Election Day on August 5 from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and if no one wins a majority the top two finishers will advance to a runoff on August 19.  WSPA
