COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Spartanburg’s City Council is launching the Grow Together Grant Program to give neighborhood associations up to $10,000 for small projects or up to $25,000 for larger ones with a deadline of October 3rd. The program uses $300,000 from a federal grant for the next three years—if it is successful the grant program may become permanent.  WSPA

CRIME NEWS

  • A 34-year-old Spartanburg man, Christopher Antwan Price, was arrested at WestGate Mall on August 5 after he assaulted patrons, punched an officer, and attempted to steal a police car (family members said he had been suffering a mental health episode) as bystanders helped officers detain him.  Go Upstate

HEALTH NEWS

  • A bill in the State House would require private insurers to cover follow-up tests for abnormal breast cancer screenings—no copays, deductibles, or coinsurance—to lower financial burdens on patients. Breast cancer survivor Sundi Herring and support groups say the measure will help catch cancer early and will be debated in January.  WSPA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Spartanburgers pitcher Jose Gonzalez earned South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week honors for July 29 to August 3 after tossing a career-high seven scoreless innings on August 3 — striking out seven and lowering his ERA to 2.83. He is the second team starter to win the honor and now leads with 86 innings pitched and 90 strikeouts.  Spartanburg.com
