CRIME NEWS
- ➤ At Westgate Mall in Spartanburg, a man attacked patrons around 4 p.m. Tuesday before trying to steal a police car and punching officers, and he faces multiple charges including carjacking, assault, resisting arrest and aggravated breach of peace after being booked into county detention on Wednesday—he was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation as police continue their investigation. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ At a recent meeting, Spartanburg City Council heard from City Manager Chris Story on the Morgan Square redevelopment and downtown changes that will remove 275 parking spaces while postponing the square's work until at least the end of 2025. Story also reported plans to move the historic clock tower for a streetscaping project and suggested an exhibit to honor its long history — council will address these plans at a future meeting. - ➤ South Carolina Gov. McMaster said on X that an executive order—set to limit SNAP purchases to exclude candy and soda—will be issued in the next few days. The order will use current point-of-sale systems to help reduce sugar consumption and support public health. Go Upstate
