- ➤ Voters in Spartanburg School District One will decide in November whether to approve a $140 million plan to build two new schools and renovate one without raising taxes. DJ Brown said the plan will update aging facilities and lower maintenance costs by replacing old spaces — a move to modernize schools using increased property values — with informational meetings scheduled soon. - ➤ Early voting began Wednesday in Spartanburg County for runoff elections for sheriff and council district three. Voters can choose between Rusty Clevenger—the county coroner—and Bill Rhyne for sheriff and between Paul Abbott and Jason Lynch for council, with voting ending Friday and the runoff set for August 19th. - ➤ Candidates Paul Abbott and Jason Lynch are preparing for the Spartanburg County Council District 3 runoff after neither reached a 50 percent vote in the primary—voters in city areas and rural precincts have shown distinct support trends. - ➤ Spartanburg County is working on several road projects and next Monday, August 18th, crews will close West Cleveland Street from Manning Street to Fairforest Road for safety upgrades—fixing a steep curve and creating a safer 90 degree turn. The detour will last 6 to 8 weeks and aims to reduce dangerous spots along the road. WSPA

Department of Transportation said the nearly decade-long $480M I-85 widening project in Spartanburg and Cherokee counties is nearing completion as final paving on the southbound lanes is scheduled overnight in the coming weeks—work that started in 2017 and expanded lanes from mile marker 77 to 98. The project aims to ease rising traffic levels by replacing old interchanges and upgrading the highway to six lanes. The Post and Courier
