COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Supporters marched on Sunday in Easley urging county officials to designate the Greenville Pickens Speedway as a historic site—key to local NASCAR history—amid concerns that nearby industrial development will soon threaten its future.  WSPA

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • One person was killed on Saturday in a wreck near 5301 Highway 9 in Inman — Francisco Jose 'Poncho' Ocampo of Spartanburg died at the scene and the Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.  WSPA

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hyder Farms, a family-run operation in Spartanburg County with over 17,000 peach trees, has grown peaches for a century and now distributes its crops to markets in Spartanburg, Greenville, Simpsonville, Easley, and Travelers Rest—its season runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day with hand-pruned trees and H-2A visa workers. Brandon and Phillip Hyder continue to work on the farm while carefully managing 17 varieties of peaches such as Freestone and China Pearl.  The Post and Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rusty Clevenger and Bill Rhyne are competing in a runoff to be the next Spartanburg County Sheriff with Clevenger highlighting his long service as coroner and Rhyne promising change from his Highway Patrol experience—both addressing issues like deputy recruitment, jail overcrowding and traffic safety before the runoff on August 19.  Go Upstate
  • Kent Bontrager was named the new Vice President and Chief Planning and Development Officer at the Greenville—Spartanburg Airport District, effective July 28, and he now leads strategic planning and capital projects to guide the airport’s growth.  Spartanburg.com
