ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Two Upstate firefighters were injured Sunday when their vehicle crashed while heading to a medical emergency+ they and the driver of the other car were taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital and remain hospitalized. WYFF
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A South Carolina man, Raymond Shaun Prichard, was charged with attempted murder after he stabbed his 72-year-old mother, whose injuries were discovered by a family member in Marlboro County—and he is now held at the detention center. WYFF
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Spartanburg County officials are preparing for a runoff election today after no candidate reached 50% in the primary. The sheriff race pits Bill Rhyne against Rusty Clevenger while the district three council seat is contested by Paul Abbott Jr. and Jason Lynch, and polling locations remain mostly unchanged—only the Cannon Elementary precinct now casts votes at a new site. - ➤ Governor Henry McMaster authorized the deployment of 200 National Guardsmen from Gaffney, Union and Fountain Inn to support federal law enforcement in Washington, D.C.—the troops are scheduled to arrive today and can be recalled immediately if a hurricane or natural disaster strikes. WYFF
- ➤ The South Carolina Office of Resiliency is hosting mobile intake events in the Upstate to help Helene survivors apply for disaster recovery assistance; a mobile event at Spartanburg’s Cyrill-Westside Library runs today from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with events held on Monday in Abbeville and planned in Abbeville and Greenville from Wednesday through Friday.—Officials will develop personalized recovery plans for each applicant. - ➤ Spartanburg Mayor Jerome Rice faces a challenge from James A. Jones in his bid for reelection this November while Councilman Jamie Fulmer is opposed by Dawn Maddux, a public health nurse; filings closed on August 15. Four candidates are running for the empty District 2 city council seat and three are contesting the commission of public works role for the Spartanburg Water System, marking a busy election season for city government.
