COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Staff Sergeant Joe Boyd Meaders, a decorated Vietnam War veteran from Greenwood, will be honored today by over 80,000 fans at Clemson University’s first football game of the season—celebrating his lifetime of service and courage amid his ongoing battle with stage four lung cancer. His family and community view this event as a tribute to his enduring legacy and sacrifice.  WYFF
  • At the Eastside Family YMCA, volunteer Pat Hardin—retired schoolteacher—read her 1,000th book to children and their parents. She normally reads twice a week and discusses authors and illustrations with her listeners to help them understand the stories.  WYFF

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Monday, South Carolina drivers must follow the new hands-free law that bans holding mobile devices while driving—drivers may use voice commands or mounts instead. Officers will issue warnings during the 180-day grace period before fines and license points apply.  WYFF
  • South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson and Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver said the state asked the U.S. Supreme Court to block a Fourth Circuit order that allowed a Berkeley County school to let one student use a restroom that does not match state law. Wilson said the fight is about keeping children safe and their privacy protected—rules set by the state law.  WSPA

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Spartanburg City Council approved a $70 million plan to turn the old mill site near Beaumont Mill into 247 market-rate apartments and 28 workforce units — a project set to meet growing local housing needs. The development will tie into the Daniel Morgan Trail System and begin construction in February after a full traffic study confirmed minimal impact on neighborhood roads.  WSPA
