COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Fountain Inn man won $1 million in the South Carolina Education Lottery’s Second-Chance Promotion from the July 31 drawing and paid off his house and a family member’s home—he said the win has changed everything for him.  WYFF

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spartanburg police officer Michael Parris pulled over drivers on Monday for holding their phones as South Carolina’s new hands-free law took effect, allowing a six-month grace period (until March 1) for warnings only. After the grace period, first-time offenders will face a $100 fine while repeat offenders will incur higher fines and license points.  WYFF
  • Candidates for Spartanburg City Council and mayor are focusing on city growth and public safety as Mayor Jerome Rice, who highlights Project Core, faces challenger James Jones. Council races also are competitive as candidates discuss responsible planning to keep our city balanced.  Go Upstate
  • Spartanburg County will close the SC 11 bridge over I-26 on Sept. 3 for repairs, and the bridge will remain closed until October so that drivers must take a detour (DOT said weather permitting the work will take about one month to complete).  The Post and Courier
  • City leaders in Spartanburg mourn former Mayor Junie White—who served the city for 12 years—and honor his lasting legacy as officials hold his family in their thoughts.  WSPA

SPORTS NEWS

  • South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers led his team to a 24-11 win over Virginia Tech on Aug. 31 but was sacked four times and stripped once, showing a clear need for better offensive line protection — a recurring issue that has drawn criticism toward Coach Shane Beamer. Improved protection is seen as crucial for Sellers to fully use his dual-threat skills in future games.  Go Upstate
