- ➤ Local realtor John Fravel organizes a fishing tournament at Lake Bowen on Saturday, September 20 to raise funds for the Warriors Once Again charity that benefits veterans. Registration begins at 6 a.m. and the event starts at 7 a.m. with a weigh-in at 2 p.m. WSPA
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ In Gray Court, 17-year-old Tyler Bishop was killed when 39-year-old Barrett Power drove 105 mph in a 45 mph zone with a BAC of .19 while turning left, and Tyler’s mother Ashley Mahaffey said she feels the loss deeply—Power now faces felony DUI resulting in death charges. WYFF

- ➤ Spartanburg’s oldest building on Morgan Square, built in 1882, now holds a Starbucks but has a dark past since T.J. Trimmier was murdered there when he ran a bookstore and printing shop—its history includes many changes in use over the years. The Post and Courier
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Family and the Spartanburg community remembered former mayor Junie White, who died earlier this week at age 87 of natural causes. He served from 2009 until 2022 and city officials lowered the flag to half-staff—honoring his decades of public service and kindness. WYFF
- ➤ The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announced that over the next few days law enforcement will patrol the interstates as part of Operation SafeDRIVE—an effort to check for traffic violations, dangerous driver behavior and vehicle compliance with a focus on commercial vehicles. Local agencies will partner with state officers to reduce collisions and unsafe driving behaviors. WYFF

- ➤ Upstate residents can cast multiple votes for Ingles high school girls athlete of the week until noon on Sept. 4. Nominees include volleyball standout Reese Shugart, who recorded 21 kills in a 3 to 1 girls volleyball win over Riverside — and cross country runner McKee Kent, who finished third with a time of 19:45.10 at the Eye Opener meet.
