COMMUNITY NEWS

  • WYFF News 4 reporter Carol Clarke, a trusted local broadcaster for over 40 years, announced her retirement and her last day will be Friday, December 12—she scaled back her schedule earlier this year to focus more on reporting and writing.  WYFF

CULTURE NEWS

  • Spartanburg hosts the Greek Festival today through September 21 at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at 697 Asheville Highway + visitors can enjoy Greek food, live music, dancing, and church tours while free shuttle service is offered from Gibbs Stadium.  Go Upstate
  • Walnut Grove Plantation's main house has been restored after a $1.5 million project funded by local donors and a state grant. The historic site—dating to 1763—will reopen for public tours at FestiFall on Oct. 4-5.  Go Upstate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The South Carolina State Elections Commission removed executive director Howard Knapp—citing a need for new leadership—and named Jenny Wooten as interim director on Sept. 17. The board said the decision was not linked to state election conduct even as legal debates over releasing voter registration data to the DOJ continue.  Go Upstate
  • Officials said the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office may form a citizen review board after former Sheriff Chuck Wright resigned amid a criminal probe. County Councilmember Monier Abusaft and sheriff candidate Bill Rhyne plan to work with law enforcement and the public over the next few months to set up the board — a move aimed at restoring trust.  The Post and Courier
  • Spartanburg Water crews are replacing a waterline from World War II on Union Street, so one lane will stay closed until 2026. After the water system is updated, the South Carolina Department of Transportation will start repaving from East Henry to Southport to help local businesses and homes + the project is expected to boost future development.  Go Upstate
  • OneSpartanburg, Inc. announced the participants for the 46th Leadership Spartanburg Class today— a nine-month program that connects local professionals with community leaders and elected officials to gain deeper insights into Spartanburg County. The program will support leadership development and strengthen ties among local business, economic, and tourism sectors.  Spartanburg.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Former South Carolina quarterback Conner Shaw collapsed while coaching his son's football game on Sept. 17 and was taken to a Greenville hospital—his family has not yet provided an update on his condition.  Go Upstate

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Spartanburgers ended their inaugural season with a 2-1 loss to the Brooklyn Cyclones at Fifth Third Park Tuesday—securing the Cyclones' first South Atlantic League title. Hub City will begin the 2026 season on April 3 against the Frederick Keys and host the Greenville Drive in the I-85 Rivalry series starting April 7.  Spartanburg.com
  • Six Wofford basketball players were suspended by the NCAA for receiving improper benefits from an off-campus housing deal after coach Dwight Perry was fired on Sept 12. The players were suspended on Sept 17 and will have 30 days to decide if they want to enter the transfer portal—putting the team’s season in jeopardy as interim coach Drew Gibson takes charge.  Go Upstate
  • Former Gaffney quarterback Jayvon Gilmore decommitted from Arkansas football after he unenrolled from his high school program two days ago. The four-star recruit originally committed in August and now holds offers from schools — Arizona, Virginia Tech, UNC Charlotte, Boston College, and Louisville.  Go Upstate
