COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Trees Upstate partnered with Duke Energy to give away over 1,000 trees in Greenville on September 19; the nonprofit provided planting instructions to help reforest areas after Hurricane Helene — more giveaways will take place in Spartanburg, Seneca, Greenwood and Simpsonville.  WSPA
  • Cecil Hart, a 100-year-old veteran who served as an ambulance driver in WWII, was awarded France’s Legion of Honor on Sept. 12 — his work in the 366th Medical Battalion helped free western Europe — in a ceremony on Hilton Head. His daughter-in-law said the honor recognized his bravery for his country.  The Post and Courier

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lance Footer is a legally blind comic book artist who uses a magnifying glass to draw covers for small publishers and create trading cards for Marvel. He overcame many challenges by turning to art and tandem cycling—winning national championships—and will show his work at upcoming conventions in Gastonia from Dec. 12 to 13 and at SC Comicon in Greenville in April.  WSPA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A District Five teacher assistant at River Ridge Elementary filed a federal lawsuit against the district after being fired for Facebook comments about conservative activist Charlie Kirk following his murder on Sept. 10. Her attorney claims her dismissal violated her First Amendment rights—she seeks reinstatement or lost wages while arguing her comments did not disrupt school operations.  Go Upstate

  • On September 19th, Hillcrest beat Mauldin 29 to 7 in the Game of the Week with standout plays that secured their 13th straight win in the Golden Strip derby—Hillcrest now sits at three wins and one loss and will face Greenwood while Mauldin readies a road game with T.L. Han.  WYFF
