COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Community leaders at the Bethlehem Center launched a capital campaign to raise funds for a new 42,000 sq. ft. facility at Highland and Daniel Morgan Avenue that will double capacity for community programs when construction begins early next year. Bethlehem Center Executive Director Patrena Mims said the current 10,000 sq. ft. center will be demolished—making room for modern improvements to boost local economic mobility. WSPA
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Former teacher assistant Lauren Vaughn, who worked six years at River Ridge Elementary, filed a lawsuit against the district after she was fired on September 15 for a private Facebook post criticizing Charlie Kirk’s Second Amendment views—she claims the firing violated her constitutional rights and caused lost wages, harm to her reputation, and emotional distress. The suit seeks her reinstatement or payment for the losses, and the district has not yet responded to the allegations. WSPA
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Spartanburg City Council voted 5—0 on Monday night to enact a hate crime ordinance that adds penalties for crimes with a hate component to boost local protections beyond federal law. The move comes after SIREN drafted the ordinance in August to address concerns over hate crimes in the city. WSPA
- ➤ Spartanburg City Council voted four to two on Monday night to tear down and move the clock tower from downtown that had stood since 1989—this decision will support a streetscaping project and a new hotel and mixed-use development starting construction this fall while it may reduce Morgan Square redevelopment funds by up to $900,000. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ South Carolina health officials confirmed a skunk in Anderson County tested positive for rabies and exposed two cows while a raccoon in Spartanburg County tested positive, leading to one dog being quarantined. Another raccoon in Charleston County also tested positive and exposed one person who was referred to a health care provider. WYFF
- ➤ Costco recalled its Kirkland-brand ahi tuna wasabi poke product sold in 33 states after tests found green onions in the item were positive for listeria monocytogenes; the recalled items carry a packing date of Sept 18 and a sell-by date of Sept 22. Customers are advised to discard the product + contact Costco for a refund while officials confirmed no related illnesses have been reported. WSPA

- ➤ Cinnamon, a 2-month-old kitty now spayed and microchipped, is ready for adoption at the Spartanburg Humane Society for $95 (which covers boarding, daycare and heartworm prevention) and comes with a sibling as kittens are recommended in pairs. The humane society encourages families to give these kittens a fur-ever home. WSPA
- ➤ Today is the first day of fall and many farms in the Upstate are hosting corn mazes, pumpkin patches, hayrides and themed events with varied admission fees and operating hours.
