ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A fire broke out Monday night at the McDonald's on Cedar Springs Road in Spartanburg County—officials have marked the restaurant 'unsafe' while the damage and reopening remain uncertain. WYFF
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Law enforcement said more than 2,000 people received tickets for Move Over Law violations from September 15 to 19 after three troopers were struck in one month — one was killed — with 1,815 tickets issued by highway patrol and more citations issued by other agencies. WSPA
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Spartanburg District Five held a forum on the proposed no-tax bond referendum for new school projects on Tuesday, September 23 at Duncan Elementary School of the Arts at 6 p.m. + The district scheduled future forums at Florence Chapel Middle School on September 30, Abner Creek Middle School on October 2, and Byrnes Freshman Academy+ as it plans a no-tax bond vote on November 4. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A planned Valara data center in Spartanburg County set for 2026 will face stricter emissions testing requirements after environmental groups raised concerns about air pollution—extra formaldehyde tests will occur at launch and every three years. Northmark Strategies said it will work closely with the state to meet all permit limits. The Post and Courier
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Spartanburg City Council passed the first reading of a hate crime ordinance on Sept. 22 that will add extra fines and jail time for crimes motivated by bias—joining 22 other municipalities in South Carolina with similar laws. The ordinance still must pass another vote before it becomes law. The Post and Courier
- ➤ The South Carolina Ethics Commission found probable cause in four complaints against former sheriff Chuck Wright for nepotism and misusing a county-funded credit card for personal expenses, and a council member plus a former deputy said he should have followed the same laws he enforced as investigations by SLED and the Attorney General’s Office will proceed soon. - ➤ The South Carolina Ethics Commission found probable cause on four ethics complaints against former Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright—complaints include alleged nepotism for hiring his son, and the commission will release more details on September 25. This development follows Wright's resignation amid earlier controversy. Go Upstate

- ➤ The South Carolina Department of Public Health confirmed a rabid skunk near Liberty in Anderson County that exposed two cows and a rabid raccoon near Lyman in Spartanburg County that exposed a dog now under quarantine—skunk testing was submitted on September 18 and confirmed on September 19 while raccoon testing was submitted on September 17 and confirmed on September 18.
