CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Former Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright misused over $17,000 of public funds to buy personal items — including cigarettes, an iPad and fast food — as detailed in the SC State Ethics Commission notice released Oct. 1. The Post and Courier
- ➤ A misdemeanor assault & battery charge against Spartanburg County Councilman Monier Abustaf was dismissed Tuesday after an investigation revealed that false witness statements and withheld facts led to confirmation by city review that no assault occurred, with the charge stemming from a September argument in which Abustaf was accused of shoving a trash can into a homeowner’s leg & abdomen. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A state judge rejected a challenge to block the SC Election Commission from sharing sensitive data on 3.3 million voters with the Justice Department. The Oct. 1 decision said that the federal need for the information outweighed privacy concerns—Gov. McMaster praised the ruling. The Post and Courier
- ➤ A group called Support the Spartanburg Clock Tower filed a lawsuit on Oct.1 that halted work to remove the downtown clock tower—planned as part of redeveloping the area with a new government building under Project Core—and a hearing is scheduled for Oct.6 to decide if the Heritage Act protects the monument.
