- ➤ Spartanburg held its annual International Festival at Barnet Park where residents celebrated many cultures with tents from 30 countries — Paraguay was honored. Festival guests enjoyed singing, dancing and food while city officials say they will plan next year's event. WSPA
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The new Spartanburg Planetarium Learning Center will open on October 17 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 151 S. Church St.—the $15 million facility includes a 136-seat theater under a 50-foot dome and a maker lab honoring local pioneer Kitty Black Perkins. The Post and Courier
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ About 40 Spartanburg residents gathered by the downtown clock tower on Oct. 4 to protest its demolition approved by City Council and to support a lawsuit filed by advocate Kimberly Branch that argues the move violates the South Carolina Heritage Act. A judge ordered a temporary pause on work until a 9:30 a.m. hearing today—letting officials review the preservation case before proceeding. The Post and Courier
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The South Carolina Department of Public Health confirmed a measles outbreak in the Upstate with eight cases reported as of Oct 1—five of those cases occurred in the past month among unvaccinated individuals.
