COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Stephan, a 5-month-old mix weighing about 25 pounds and expected to reach 45—50 pounds when grown, became available for adoption on Monday at Spartanburg Humane Society on Dexter Road. The $95 fee covers six months of heartworm prevention, six nights of boarding at Southport Kennel, and five days of daycare at Hounds Town.  WSPA
  • An injunction hearing was held Monday to decide the future of the historic clock tower in Morgan Square as residents and officials clashed over its heritage and removal plans. The judge did not rule on a preliminary injunction, and the community awaits further news—local supporters stress the landmark unites Spartanburg's history.  WSPA

CRIME NEWS

  • Former Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright faces 65 ethics charges—two for hiring his son as a deputy and 63 for spending county funds on personal items—and a formal hearing will be held Feb 19th at 9:30 a.m. in Columbia.  WYFF

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Spartanburg School District Seven Board of Trustees voted Monday night to appoint Sally Carroll as the new board member for District 7—4. She will officially join the board today and serve until November until 2027, replacing Rick Gray who resigned after moving out of the district.  WSPA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On October 6, a judge heard arguments over the planned removal of the 1970s clocktower on West Main Street after a group claimed it violated the South Carolina Heritage Act. The clocktower was set for removal by the city as part of a plan to build a new hotel and government building — its historic pieces may be displayed in the new complex.  Go Upstate
  • Early primary voting began in Greenville and Spartanburg counties for special elections to fill State Senate District 12 and State House District 21 seats after Sen. Roger Nutt and Rep. Bobby Cox resigned—voters may cast ballots until Oct 17, with the primaries on Oct 21 and the general election on Dec 23.  Go Upstate
  • The Public Service Commission has begun hearings in Spartanburg to gather local input on Duke Energy’s proposed 7.7% rate increase that may raise a 1,000 kilowatt-hour residential bill by about $10.38 monthly—more in-person and virtual hearings are scheduled later in October and November.  WSPA

  • Local sports fans are invited to vote for the Upstate Ingles girls athlete of the week from Sept. 29 to Oct. 5 & the poll accepts multiple votes until noon on Oct. 9. The selection features athletes like Zara Russell who posted strong numbers in recent matches.  Go Upstate
  • Upstate Ingles has opened voting for the high school boys athlete of the week from Sept. 29—Oct. 5 with fans allowed to vote multiple times until noon Oct. 9. The candidates include players from Crescent, Pendleton, Gaffney, Wren, Spartanburg, Woodruff, Daniel, Christ Church, St. Joseph’s, Byrnes, Eastside and Greer Middle College.  Go Upstate
