BUSINESS NEWS

  • Rural King opened its first South Carolina store at WestGate Mall in the space once occupied by Sears—vacant since 2018. The store at 205 W. Blackstock Road will host a grand opening from Oct.17-19 and create 75 full- and part-time jobs.  The Post and Courier
  • Downtown Pizza opened its doors on Monday at 156 Magnolia Street in Spartanburg. The restaurant offers authentic New York-style pizzas made with fresh ingredients & is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.  WSPA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spartanburg City Council agreed to relocate its clock tower from Morgan Square after a lawsuit settlement—mandating the move for a new mixed-use development—and will choose the new site with public input while redesign work on the square resumes in early 2026.  The Post and Courier

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sixteen measles cases have been reported in the Upstate since July, including five new cases announced Tuesday, and 139 students from Global Academy and Fairforest Elementary are now quarantining at home. A case in Greenville County was linked to Crunch Fitness on September 30 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.—if you were there, health officials said to seek care—and a mobile unit will soon offer measles vaccinations in the Upstate.  WSPA
  • Patients with UnitedHealthcare will pay higher out-of-pocket costs for treatment at Spartanburg Regional today after the hospital ended its contract with the insurer following failed negotiations—this change affects its commercial and Medicare plans but not the supplemental plans.  The Post and Courier

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Local housing programs such as SC State Housing and Palmetto Heroes — which offer down payment assistance — are helping residents move closer to homeownership while a free rent reporting option helps renters build their credit scores. More locals are using these tools to improve affordability and secure better lending terms.  WSPA
  • Spartanburg City Council talked about an $18M plan to build a new mixed-use project at 109 and 111 East Main Street on Oct.13 — the plan calls for a restaurant, stores, and 22 to 26 apartments. Construction is set to start by the second quarter of 2026 — the project will restore parts of an old Montgomery Ward building and boost downtown momentum.  The Post and Courier

  • SCHSL high school football teams will play in Week 8 beginning Friday, Oct 17 as many state matchups aim to shape season records — teams like A.C. Flora at Dreher and Spartanburg at Boiling Springs will compete to boost their standings.  Go Upstate
