COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Monica Floyd was named the new leader of the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen after a unanimous board vote. Floyd, a five-year veteran chosen from over 140 applicants after the previous director’s passing — she said she looks forward to helping the homeless, hungry and seniors.  WSPA
  • Project Rest in Spartanburg will host the 20th Annual Interpersonal Violence Conference at First Baptist North Spartanburg on Oct 17 at 8:30 a.m.—attendees can earn continuing education credits while learning about domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, trauma, mental health and victims’ rights, with support from local partners including Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System and the police department.  WSPA
  • Morgan Corp is hosting its 3rd annual Truck or Treat event in Duncan on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 3-7 p.m.—the free event will feature 25 decorated trucks, contests, simulators, games and candy while raising funds for Special Olympics South Carolina.  WYFF

CULTURE NEWS

  • Walnut Grove Plantation in Spartanburg County has reopened for inside tours after 18 months of restoration that uncovered original paint colors and wood details. The $1.5 million project funded by the Spartanburg County Foundation—local artist John Rainey used colonial grain painting techniques to restore the home built in 1765 by Charles and Mary Moore.  WSPA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Upstate residents have reported more Joro spiders, an invasive species from East Asia, around their homes as the spiders grow in number after mating season — experts say the spiders’ golden webs and bright markings are linked to a drop in native spider numbers. Homeowners can remove the spiders by hand or with insect sprays if the creatures become a nuisance.  WYFF

HEALTH NEWS

  • Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System and UnitedHealthcare extended their contract until October 24 to avoid network disruptions for employer-sponsored plans—new negotiations are ongoing to secure a longer agreement while Group Retiree PPO members can still see Spartanburg Regional doctors with no extra cost if the provider accepts the plan.  WSPA
  • The South Carolina Department of Public Health reported that 139 students are quarantining in the Upstate due to a measles outbreak tied to low vaccination rates — officials said rising religious exemptions have reduced herd immunity. A mobile vaccination unit will be set up today and Friday at Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Spartanburg to help protect the community.  WYFF
