COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cherokee County Animal Shelter on Progressive Drive near Gaffney is overcrowded and may have to euthanize stray animals when temperatures drop—officials report nearly 200 dogs and 90 cats are housed now. The shelter will host free and reduced-fee adoptions along with community events on Oct. 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—efforts meant to boost rescues and prevent more animals from being euthanized.  The Post and Courier
  • Spartanburg’s mayor’s Walk and Roll marked its 20th year on Wednesday morning as people from all seven county school districts, local leaders, and students with disabilities from Cherokee and Union gathered in the city center—sending a clear message that everyone deserves equal access. Mayor Jerome Rice said he wants the city to grow in a way that includes everyone and that accessible opportunities will shape future growth—making Spartanburg a more inclusive place for all.  WSPA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, Spartanburg Library unveiled its new Planetarium and Kitty Black Perkins Maker Lab — the facility is designed to offer interactive exhibits and hands-on learning experiences for visitors.  Go Upstate

HEALTH NEWS

  • The South Carolina Department of Public Health activated its Mobile Measles Vaccination Unit in response to a growing measles outbreak in Spartanburg County; free vaccines were given on Oct. 16 at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and will be available today at the same location and at additional sites through Oct. 23.  WSPA
  • Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System has extended its contract with UnitedHealthcare until Oct. 24—keeping patients in-network—while negotiations continue. If a new agreement is not reached, patients with certain plans will pay more for treatment.  The Post and Courier
