CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium will close for one year in summer 2027 to replace over 3,000 seats at a cost of $10 million — a project that will require state funding as the venue prepares for more shows. The 74-year-old space hosts 35 upcoming performances and is also discussing parking upgrades and nearby property plans with county officials under CEO Roger Newton. The Post and Courier
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Education leaders from South Carolina and Taiwan finalized a memorandum of understanding to expand K–12 global learning opportunities. The agreement will send Mandarin teachers to local schools, form sister-school partnerships and share educational programs—steps that will be reviewed annually to measure success. Spartanburg.com
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Spartanburg Planetarium Learning Center opened on Oct. 17 with Gov. Henry McMaster presenting county librarian Todd Stephens the Order of the Palmetto—marking nearly two years of planning for the 28,000‑square‑foot facility with a 136‑seat theater under a 50‑foot dome. The center will offer daily shows and guided tours Tuesday through Saturday and is expected to boost local educational opportunities. The Post and Courier

- ➤ The Savannah Bananas announced that Banana Ball will come to Spartanburg for the first time when Fifth Third Park hosts a championship series from August 6th to August 8th, 2026. Fans must enter a ticket lottery (by October 31st) for a chance to attend. Spartanburg.com
- ➤ Voting is open for Upstate Ingles high school boys athlete of the week for Oct. 13-19 until noon on Oct. 23, and voters can cast multiple votes. The contest follows last week’s win by swimmer Cade Taylor and features strong performances from Banks Bouton, Muntu Brown, Jakorey Dodd, Ben Elliott, Kiishawn Farrow, Aiden Gibson, Jace Grass, Trenton Lynch, Gideon Merhib, and Keylan Powell.
