ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ With fall weather drawing visitors to the local mountains, more people have spotted black bears foraging in both the woods and nearby neighborhoods for food like birdseed and trash. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources advises residents to remain calm — the bears are only gathering food as they get ready for hibernation. WSPA
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Spartanburg Police Department announced the passing of retired officer Javan King, Jr., who died early Monday morning. He served since 1984 and worked as a crime prevention officer and school resource officer at Dorman High School—his 40-year career was marked by kindness and dedication to public safety. WSPA
- ➤ GSP is hosting a food drive to support federal workers who lost their pay after three weeks of the government shutdown. Donations will be accepted at the terminal’s information center from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and at the valet parking kiosk from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.—the collected items will go to a pop-up pantry serving TSA, FAA and other GSP federal employees. - ➤ The SCHSL high school football Week 9 schedule lists games from Oct. 23 — Oct. 25 with key matchups such as Allendale Fairfax at Bamberg-Ehrhardt and Academic Magnet at Woodland. Many contests will be streamed on NFHSBarnwell as teams compete across the state. Go Upstate
