COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Spartanburg Soup Kitchen reported a surge in visitors due to the ongoing government shutdown—it served about 375 guests on Wednesday, above its normal average of 300 meals. Executive Director Monica Floyd said delayed benefits have stressed local families and that the kitchen relies solely on donations.  WYFF

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at Swofford Career Center in Inman are training to be certified firefighters in a two-semester program that awards a Firefighter II rating—local fire departments are ready to hire graduates immediately. The 280-hour course covers classroom and hands-on skills including HAZMAT operations and battery fire safety.  WSPA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Beginning Monday, October 27, county crews will close the intersection of Clark Road and Bishop Road to build a roundabout aimed at reducing accidents—detours will affect Calvery, Stallion, Bryant and Royston.  WSPA
  • Jeff Horton, a former county council chair—who led Spartanburg County through nearly 25 years of service and growth—died on Oct 20 at Spartanburg Regional Hospital at age 65 after a severe heart attack. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Oct 30 at Lake Bowen Baptist Church.  The Post and Courier

HEALTH NEWS

  • As fall temperatures cool, tick populations are increasing in grassy areas because climate change is raising moisture levels—experts advise taking preventive measures such as tucking pants into socks and using insecticides to lower the risk of tick bites; people should also check themselves and pets after outdoor activities.  WSPA
