COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The federal shutdown will pause SNAP benefits beginning (Nov. 1), so food banks in Spartanburg and nearby areas are posting schedules and locations to aid those in need. The USDA estimates over 260,000 South Carolinians and millions nationally will be affected by the pause. Go Upstate
- ➤ Kingston Homestyle Kitchen in downtown Spartanburg is gathering donations—bedding, food, school supplies, and clothing—to help Jamaicans who are recovering after Hurricane Melissa. Donations can be dropped off at 256 N Church Street Monday through Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. WSPA
- ➤ Fifth Third Park in downtown Spartanburg hosted its first-ever Chuck-or-Treat event on Wednesday at 5 p.m., featuring trick-or-treating, pumpkin decorating stations, live music, photo opportunities with team mascots and a costume contest awarding a gift card. Local businesses handed out candy, free admission was offered with ballpark concessions available, and parking was provided at the garage adjacent to the stadium (the event ran rain or shine). WSPA
- ➤ Waxing Moon Boutique in Gaffney will donate 10% of all Friday, Oct. 31 sales to support a family affected by a deadly house fire—Co-owner Migie Blackwell said the monthly donation drive has been a commitment since the boutique opened in April. WYFF
- ➤ Greenville Spartanburg International Airport continues a food drive to help federal employees as the busy travel season nears—donors can drop off shelf-stable food and household items at the terminal's information center from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and at the valet parking kiosk from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to receive 25% off pre-booked parking. The drive has already helped over 130 people this week and supports TSA, FAA, NWS, and CBP staff. WSPA

- ➤ Spartanburg will host many live concerts and holiday shows this November at venues such as Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium and FR8yard. Events range from a ballet and a rock musical to folk music gigs and benefit events—dates span from November 1 to November 28, with free options and ticketed shows available. The Post and Courier
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Spartanburg voters will decide on two school bond referendums on November 4 that will fund updates for District 1 and address overcrowding in District 5. The $140 million bond for District 1 will rebuild two schools and renovate one, while the $200 million proposal for District 5 will rebuild two schools and build a new middle school — both projects promise no new taxes. - ➤ Upstate travelers remain stranded in Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa struck — over 70% of the island has lost power and many roads are blocked, leaving visitors and residents with few essential supplies. Relief efforts by Jamaica Relief Ministries are underway to provide aid as canceled flights and limited cell service complicate communication. WYFF
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ In South Carolina, daylight saving time will end on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 2 a.m.—clocks will be set back one hour Saturday night so residents get an extra hour of sleep. State law supports making the time change permanent, but federal approval is still needed, and daylight saving time will resume on Sunday, March 8 at 2 a.m. Go Upstate

- ➤ First Presbyterian Academy won its third straight SCISA Class AAA state volleyball championship after defeating Florence Christian in four sets with scores 23 to 25, 25 to 18, 25 to 15 and 26 to 24 at Cardinal New High School on Oct. 28. Coach David Thompson said the win marked the first three-peat in school history and credited the team’s mental fortitude for the achievement. Go Upstate
