COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pastor Sylvia Dawkins of God's Mt. Calvary hosted her 57th annual Thanksgiving feeding event at Beacon Drive-In today, serving meals and offering hope to families facing food insecurity. She has distributed around 50,000 plates over the years and aims to feed 1 million people as hunger grows in the community — her mission spanning the southeast.  WSPA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Spartanburg County council approved first reading FILOT tax breaks for Project Spero at its November 17 meeting, which could allow an undisclosed company to invest nearly $3 billion+ create around 50 jobs. The county will hold a public hearing and further review the project in December as officials expect the company to announce its plans soon.  The Post and Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Upstate Young Marines celebrated their 2025 graduating recruit class Saturday at the Rupert Hughes Veteran Center, marking over 20 years of building young leaders. Volunteer Ashley Lawton, named the 2025 Regimental Adult Volunteer of the Year, said her son Quinn—awarded the 2025 Division 2 Young Marine of the Year and now a Sergeant Major—helped guide new recruits who learn teamwork and discipline—skills that last a lifetime—through the volunteer program.  WYFF

HEALTH NEWS

  • USC Upstate has received a $1,353,520 grant from The Duke Endowment to start the CHAMPS Beatty Center—a medical—legal partnership that will help low-income families in Spartanburg, Union, and Cherokee counties with legal issues that can affect children’s health. The center will hire a social worker, administrative staff, and student interns while working with local healthcare groups and will start taking referrals in early 2026.  Spartanburg.com

  • Furman men's soccer advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament with a 1-0 win over Western Michigan at Eugene Stone III Soccer Stadium on Nov. 23 — Trip Campbell scored with assists from Diego Hernandez and Wilfer Bustamante. The Paladins will host unseeded Hofstra on either Nov. 29 or Nov. 30.  Go Upstate
  • South Carolina women's basketball will face Duke on November 26 at 4:30 p.m. ET in Las Vegas in the inaugural Players Era Women’s Championship tournament — they will play either Texas or UCLA on November 27 at 8 p.m. or 10:30 p.m. ET on Tru TV.  Go Upstate
