COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Spartanburg will hold its Dickens of Christmas tree lighting on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in downtown where roads will be closed for the event. Nearby, Easley and Pendleton celebrate today while Greenville and Anderson plan ceremonies on Dec. 5 with festive displays and visits from Santa.  Go Upstate

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Retailers are kicking off Black Friday today with many stores opening early—JCPenney and Kohl’s at 5 a.m., Best Buy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Home Depot, Macy’s, Target, and Walmart at 6 a.m., and Costco at 9 a.m.—while deals through Cyber Monday offer chances for big savings as shoppers compare prices.  WYFF
  • Upstate Christmas tree farms saw high demand during Thanksgiving as families gathered for fresh, local pines — a Clemson University report notes farms sell between 40,000 and 50,000 trees yearly. Merry Christmas Tree Farm in Central marked 45 years in business as Tracy Dobson and industry veteran Steve Penland highlighted the challenges and family traditions of tree farming.  WYFF

CULTURE NEWS

  • This holiday season, many Christmas parades will light up the Upstate with festive floats and marching bands. In Spartanburg the annual parade hosted by the Jaycees will take place on December 9 at 6:30 p.m. — registration ended November 24.  Go Upstate
  • Upstate communities including Spartanburg offer a range of holiday light displays with events running from Thanksgiving Day through New Year's Eve—examples include the Night of Lights at Heritage Park and Hollywild Magic of Lights—providing festive fun for families.  Go Upstate
  • Thanksgiving was celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November because past presidents and Congress set the date to create a national holiday—George Washington first declared a Day of Public Thanksgiving in 1789 and Congress made it official in 1941—and local families enjoyed age-old traditions. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City leaders in Spartanburg will begin discussions in early 2026 to choose a new site for the dismantled clock tower—public input and final council approval will guide the decision on placing it on publicly owned land.  Go Upstate

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Farms in Upstate SC and Western NC will open soon for the 2025 pick-and-cut Christmas tree season with Sorrels in Seneca starting the weekend before Thanksgiving while Penland, Merry Christmas, and Christmas Tree Hill Farms offer cutting services with saws and on-site help. Boyd in Waynesville and Sandy Hollar in Leicester provide local options — each with set hours, tree types, and pricing that vary by farm.  Go Upstate
  • Upstate holiday markets offer local artists and handmade goods, with events such as the 5th Annual Holiday Market in Greenville on Nov 30 and Spartanburg’s Fretwell Market on Dec 6—inviting shoppers to find unique Christmas gifts.
