CRIME NEWS

  • Spartanburg police responded at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday after a suspect stole a running car from the Hot Spot gas station, hit a bystander’s vehicle at the Collins Avenue & Georgia Street intersection, and shot a woman in the thigh; she was treated at the hospital & the stolen car is a 2011 silver Honda Pilot as officers seek any leads.  WYFF

CULTURE NEWS

  • Spartanburg will unveil the new Southside Cultural Monument on June 14 at 10 a.m. near Mary H. Wright Greenway Park at the corner of South Converse Street + Hudson Barksdale Boulevard, with leaders and a Wofford College art professor set to speak.  The Post and Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Carolina has passed a law banning stores from selling kratom to anyone under 21. The law requires clear labels—including product origin and ingredients—and fines retailers $1,000 for first violations, rising to $2,000 for repeat offenses.  WSPA
  • David Britt left his Spartanburg County Council seat on May 20 to join the South Carolina Public Service Commission, causing a special election for his District 3 seat on November 4; candidates may file from 12 p.m. June 6 to 12 p.m. June 14 for a fee of $741.51 + primaries will be held on Aug. 5 if needed.  Go Upstate
  • On May 26, 2025, Memorial Day will see government offices, banks, schools, libraries, and museums closed while grocery stores like Publix, Food Lion, and Ingles remain open with regular hours. USPS mail and public transportation services will also pause for the day — plan ahead.  Go Upstate

HEALTH NEWS

  • With a record number of people expected to travel over Memorial Day weekend, experts say drivers must stay alert, avoid distractions like cell phones, and keep grills attended—advice that also stresses checking vehicle condition and wearing seatbelts. The South Carolina Highway Patrol will add extra troopers on highways while the Department of Natural Resources will conduct boat inspections tomorrow at Twin Lakes Landing on Lake Hartwell and on Memorial Day at South Cove Landing—steps aimed at keeping everyone safe.  Go Upstate
