The project was a joint effort by the Spartanburg County Historical Association, the City of Spartanburg and the Spartanburg Convention and Visitors Bureau—fulfilling a recommendation from the County’s Tourism Action Plan. - ➤ Spartanburg got its name from the Revolutionary War Spartan Regiment formed in 1775 that fought in key battles; the county was named in 1785 and the city was incorporated in 1831.
